its sad how true this is, ware have all our heroes gone? ..... From a male in his 60s in Bethesda MD, United States A concern about leadership in our country that makes me sad. An elder friend of mine said to me, "Things may be bad now, but we've had it worse - depression, world war, plagues, etc." I responded, "What is most sad for me is that in the past, we had some "hero" who emerged to save us from the problem. I don't sense we have such a person today. Who can we get excited about and support to lead us into a new and good future?" What saddens me the most is not having an answer to that question. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~! From a male in his 60s in Austin TX, United States. A summary of the decline and fall of the once greatest nation on earth, which began in the latter half of the 20th century but was marked by September 11, 2001. At a time when leadership was desperately needed, we ran out of luck with George Bush. What makes me sad is the decline and fall of the beacon of hope once provided by America. Greed, self-indulgence, a growing sense of entitlement, and fear conspired to reduce the brilliant idea of America to a shell. While it began in the latter half of the 20th century, the decline is best marked by September 11, 2001. Until that time, in times of crisis, America had great leadership: Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy. Our luck ended with Bush, an ordinary man at best, totally ill-equipped intellectually or psychologically to lead. So, the last opportunity to redicate this country to its founding ideals, to elicit sacrifice for the common good from willing citizens, was frittered away. Bush became the unwitting ally of Bin Laden and his terrorist network by promulgating fear instead of hope, greed instead of sacrifice, anger instead of joy, war instead of peace. He trampled on our Constitution and the principles of the Magna Carta. We would never be the same. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~! From a female aged 70+ in Sumter SC, United States A sad comentary on our crumbling society..... The fall of the American empire. I am a 70 year old female and won't be around much longer. I was raised in a wonderful loving family. In the fifties when I was young, America was a country where decency and honor was prevalent. Most of the world wanted to emulate our way of life. We were in our "Camelot" Days, much respected and honored. I have lived to see our slow decline.. Drugs , gangs and crime have taken over. Things that used to be expected and acceptable such as marriage and believing in God, are frowned upon and even ridiculed. Having children and not being married is glorified, as is any alternate lifestyle imagineable. Today in the 21st century,. America is considered to be arrogant, and meddlesome ,wielding our power with the threat of nuclear anhilation if people do not accept "our way" of life. It seems as if we have lost the respect and good faith of most of the known world. All through history, Empires have fallen by the wayside. Is that what is happening to America?
